Are You Living in Alignment? The Power of Integrity in Leadership

One of our most difficult struggles as humans is aligning our external experiences with our internal values. There's a lot of trial and error throughout life, but I believe this journey ultimately defines what integrity means to each of us.

The world doesn’t always offer experiences that naturally reflect our deepest values. More often than not, we are met with situations that test them. From a spiritual perspective, I believe that's part of why we're here—to learn, grow, and realign.

Here’s a fact: No one gets out of this life alive. And no one gets through it without countless opportunities to grow. Everyone carries a story of hardship, of resilience, and joy. It's up to us to embrace the lessons or ignore them.

So why do we resist the very people and situations that bring these lessons forward? I believe it starts with fear. Specifically, the fear of standing firmly in who we are. We chase external validation—hoping it will make us feel worthy, accepted, even happy. But those feelings aren’t sustainable if they depend on someone else’s approval.

Throughout my career, I’ve worked with leaders across many levels, and here’s something I’ve come to deeply understand:

Every next step in leadership calls for a courageous reevaluation. It asks us to update or even release deeply rooted beliefs that no longer serve who we are becoming.

These moments invite honesty—honesty about what we value now and who we truly are.

When we’re out of alignment with our values, we feel it. Discontent, stress, and unexpected roadblocks show up as cues. That’s your signal to look inward.

Here are some reflection questions I often share with clients and leaders:

  • What beliefs are driving this behavior or decision?

  • Where did those beliefs come from, and are they still true for me today?

  • How can I update these beliefs to reflect who I am now?

  • Am I staying true to my principles in my everyday actions?

  • Do I engage with others with fairness, openness, honesty, and respect?

  • Are my small, day-to-day choices reflecting integrity?

  • Am I letting external pressure sway me away from my core values?

  • Am I willing to self-reflect and truly receive feedback?

No one knows you better than you.

Do you have the courage to be brutally honest with yourself? There is freedom in that self-discovery.

“The greatest revolution of our generation is the discovery that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.”
— William James
