The Biggest Room in the World

The biggest room in the world….it’s the room for improvement!

We can thank Helmut Schmidt for that Dad Joke, but I think it’s a great concept!

We all manage ourselves, our companies, and our teams by setting goals; ideally, with goals that require a stretch but are achievable. Perfection - if it indeed exists - is an ever-evolving ideal and therefore does not make a realistic goal.

Rather than perfection, improvement is far and away the most consistently effective goal.

What can we improve? The list is endless!

  • Skills

  • Knowledge

  • Processes

  • Efficiency

  • Effectiveness

  • Relationships

  • Performance

  • [Insert yours here!]

Of course, on the surface gradual improvement doesn’t sound nearly as exciting as achieving a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal)! While we want to ensure there is an opportunity for those huge successes, gradual improvement should be both expected and recognized in your team. Small improvements can and do lead to big breakthroughs. Mo Farah, a world champion long-distance runner, once said “Look at my success. I didn’t achieve it overnight. It has been the product of many years’ struggle, and every year, my times have shown gradual improvement.”

Failure is also an excellent source of improvement. With intention, you can look at any failure as an opportunity to learn. What could have been done better/faster/differently and what can we change so that we succeed next time?

Personally, I am a dedicated lifelong learner with a core value of curiosity. My favorite question is “Why?”, with a close second place held by “How?”.  (It is entirely possible that I drive a few people close to me a little crazy!)  However, if I don’t ask, I won’t learn and can’t get better.

Any improvements, successes, or failures you would like to share with me? I would love to hear about them!
