When Does Personal Development Become Too Much of a Good Thing?

Over the last few years, I’ve watched the personal development industry explode like never before.

Initially, my thoughts were, “Oh wow, this is amazing! Finally, people are waking up to the possibility of being human!”

But as I saw the industry grow without slowing down, something dawned on me. I had the sinking realization that too much of a good thing can be detrimental to its initial purpose.

Before I knew it, it seemed like most of the energy surrounding this movement was focused solely on what more we could DO, how hard we could WORK, and how much more evolved we could be than the rest of the pack. I can’t help but laugh at the irony in the lesson of “We are all one” becoming more and more about separating ourselves from the rest of the world.

Personal development should improve your life, not BECOME your life.

Spirituality and transformation are not personality traits; they are a state of being. It’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly chasing the next lesson. What if the greatest lesson of all is enjoying the moment we have right now and not worrying about the rest?

Don’t allow your pursuit of personal development to become your newest addiction glamorized in the form of self-improvement. If we focus on being intentional about who we are rather than what we do, we can create the results we desire while leaving room for the miracle of life to unfold for us.

Practicing being who you are right now in the fullest expression will likely be the quickest path to self-improvement. So this holiday season, I invite you to…

  • Not take yourself too seriously.

  • Sled down a hill belly first, even if it hurts a little more than when you were eight.

  • Hug your loved ones and tell them the things you’ve always appreciated about them but were too afraid to share.

  • Give yourself the gift of trusting that there is no better moment to experience the fullness of who you are than right now.

There’s no such thing as “too much” when it comes to love.

You got this. I love you.
