“If it doesn’t matter who wins or loses, then why do we keep score?”-Vince Lombardi

I am dedicating this week’s Fundamental to the late great Vince Lombardi.

Why?

We are 3 weeks away from the start of college football season. I’m so excited!! My favorite sport to watch is college football and I am passionate for my alma mater, the University of Texas Longhorns. It’s not just the thrill of the game, the tradition, and the fun of the competition that has me loving this sport. It’s watching a group of people that have to depend on each other to achieve the results

So, why do we keep score?

We are motivated by tracking measurable outcomes. What’s more motivating for a team who is down by 7 in the last two minutes of the 4th quarter? How many times have we witnessed 4th quarter comebacks? That’s why we keep score.

However, it’s not just about focusing on the final score. It’s about looking at the small results that lead us to the overall win. It’s a progress tracker that keeps us in the game and helps us define our next action step. There is a very different play call on 3rd down and short than on 3rd down and ten yards. Each successful “down” leads us to the opportunity to put points on the board.

“The achievements of any organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” –Vince Lombardi

Vince Lombardi is known as one of the greatest football coaches in history. He was known for his great leadership and deep commitment to the win. He worked tirelessly to achieve his goals and expected the same from his team.

What made him a great leader was the example he displayed for others. He was relentless in his expectations which led him to many championships and to winning the first two Super Bowls. While he was focused on the victory, he demonstrated the work ethic, passion, and humility to earn those wins. He understood that every player on the field had to beat the guy in front of him on every play. That was his coaching, his teaching, and his measurement for success.

“Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness, and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” –Vince Lombardi

Coach Lombardi expected a high level of accountability and collaboration to achieve the results he set out to accomplish. That is still the formula for high performing teams.  At Momentum Consulting, our focus is to support organizations in building these high performing teams. We love what we do and we definitely like being on the field with our clients.

How can we help you get the win??

Fundamental #14: DELIVER RESULTS While effort is appreciated, what gets recognized and rewarded are results. Set high goals, don’t overpromise, track and measure your progress, then hold yourself accountable for delivering on the results.
