Joy amidst Challenge ~ A Poem

While we don’t get to choose what happens to us, we do create the reality about what happens.

Recently, I have felt like the world around me has been more chaotic than usual. At first, I fell back into old patterns, allowing circumstances of the external world to determine my internal world. I quickly remembered why that method doesn’t work.

Instead, I chose to create room for joy in the midst of pain and challenge. I surrendered to the full spectrum of what it means to be human and allowed grace to do its job. I gave myself permission to feel all of it. Then I wrote a poem about it I want to share with you:

Today I choose.

I choose the duality of holding pain and pleasure all in the same moment.

I choose to stop believing the lie that I cannot have it all.

Instead, I choose more.

I choose me.

I choose to be the one who sees beauty even when it’s not pretty.

I choose to let myself cry because it’s those same cords that play the song of my laughter.

I choose to cultivate grounded roots and soaring wings that carry me forward when the ground beneath me crumbles.

And I remember that the tears falling from my eyes are the same ones that water the earth and create fertile ground.

I choose the promise of my faith instead of abandoning it when I need it the most.

I choose both. Not because I’m almighty. But because I am human. And when I chose this vessel I knew that contrast was part of the deal.

I choose all of it because freedom isn’t free and the price of admission is surrender.
