What I love most about the fundamentals themselves is their simplicity.

If you want people to behave a certain way, you have to tell them how you want them to behave. That way they know what you expect from them, such as, “I expect you to FIND A WAY.”

If you have a commitment to increase performance, then the best place to start is to FIND A WAY to take personal responsibility, and to take initiative in creating a high performing culture. Otherwise, you will end up with a culture by default rather than by design. If you have already taken the steps to do this, I commend you and would love to hear what you’ve done to intentionally design the culture within your company. I’d also love to know how it’s going. Whether you’ve done this or not, I invite you to keep reading…

…After you’ve defined the behaviors you want, you must find a way to put the behaviors into practice. We call these rituals – something you do over and over again – until it becomes integrated and eventually, just how things are done in your organization.

It’s likely that not every person you work with has the same level of enthusiasm for something like: “respond to every situation by looking for how we can do it, rather than explaining why it can’t be done.”

It will take more than just giving these people the chance to practice something over and over again. What will make the biggest difference is for you yourself, along with the rest of leadership to provide in-the-moment (or as soon as possible) coaching and feedback on a day-to-day basis.

This isn’t the whole formula, but it’s a good start. We would love to share our entire framework for building a high performing culture. In the meantime, here is one way to look at it:

Culture = Behavior = Performance

So, if you are passionate about increasing performance within yourself and your organization, please feel free to bounce your ideas off of any one of us here at Momentum. We’re pretty passionate about this too and would be honored to FIND A WAY with you.

All my best,

Marlene

Fundamental of the Week #13: FIND A WAY. Respond to every situation by looking for how we can do it, rather than explaining why it can’t be done. Take personal responsibility. Be innovative, assertive, and take initiative.
